Many international travelers confuse digital immigration arrival cards with official entry visas. While arrival cards are electronic customs and health declarations, an eVisa is legal permission to enter. Many countries now require BOTH.
The Difference Between an Electronic Visa and an Arrival Pass
An eVisa (Electronic Visa) is a formal government travel authorization granting permission to enter a country for a specific purpose (tourism, business, medical) and duration. It is linked electronically to your passport or issued as a downloadable PDF.
A Digital Arrival Card (such as the Malaysia MDAC, Singapore SG Arrival Card, Aruba ED-Card, or Colombia Check-MIG) replaces the old paper slips distributed on airplanes. It records your customs declaration, accommodation address, and health status.
Holding a visa-exempt passport does NOT exempt you from submitting a mandatory digital arrival pass. Airline check-in counters will refuse boarding passes if your arrival card barcode is not generated 24-72 hours before departure.
Top Countries Requiring Mandatory Arrival Declarations
1. Malaysia (MDAC): Must be filled out within 3 days prior to arrival for almost all foreign nationals.
2. Singapore (SG Arrival Card): Required within 3 days before entry, including automated lane clearance.
3. Philippines (eTravel Pass): Generates a QR code mandatory for customs clearance.
4. Colombia (Check-MIG): Required between 72 hours and 1 hour before departure.
